Forklift Truck Training
In order to be given certification as a forklift driver, you need to undergo training on an industrial-powered forklift, or lift truck. The training program must be specific to the forklift attachments and type which you would be using on the job. Training must also reflect the atmosphere wherein you would be working. Forklift safety should be a top priority for both the trainer and the operator trainee.
General Qualifications
Before assuming any operator duties, all forklift drivers should undergo both training and certification. Basic credentials for driving a forklift include an age of at least eighteen years and the physical ability to control and operate the unit safely.
Pedestrian Safety
The safety of pedestrians must be a top concern of any forklift driver. Pedestrians near the forklift are at risk of death or injury from getting hit by the machinery or its attachments. Pedestrians always have the right of way, and forklift operators must honk their horns when working at intersections or crosswalks or near pedestrians.
Weather Conditions
Forklift accidents often take place on loading docks. These places become hazardous if rain leaks in through open dock doors causing an extremely slippery floor. Wet floor conditions create a hazard and operators have to be aware of potential hazards when working in loading dock areas.
Certification
Forklift certification courses consist of a combination of practical training and classroom instruction tailored to the particular requirements of the workplace. Training should be undertaken on the kind of forklift and attachments that would be utilized by the trainee in the workplace.
Accidents
On average, there is around 100 deaths attributed to forklift accidents, while over one hundred thousand are injured by forklifts. The majority of these accidents are preventable with proper operator training and attention to safety.

Telescopic Forklifts
Telescopic forklift models are outfitted with a pronged lift on an arm that extends over the top of the truck providing versatility and great height. The crane, or arm, is referred to as a telescopic boom. The boom enables the operator to raise the load to great heights while maintaining a high degree of control. Regular forklifts aren't able to move the load towards and away from the forklift cab, while a telescopic forklift can allow that movement. The telescopic forklift is usually used in construction and agriculture. It is better for applications where greater control and lift is needed.
A forklift carton clamp attachments are recommended in situations requiring high volume carton handling. The attachment has arm pads with four way reversible rubber linings which enable the operator to use uniform clamping force when picking up a cargo. It is available with a backrest which protects the cargo from damage.
A slip sheet attachment fits onto a slip sheet forklift. It is used for storing systems that don't utilize pallets. The attachment clamps onto the slip sheet and pulls it onto the forks on the forklift. This kind of system is handy for intra-corporate deliveries and for overseas shipments.
A man basket is a lift platform meant particularly to hoist staff. The basket attaches to the forklift forks, held in with a strap or chain that is to be secured directly to the forklift carriage. The platform has railings to protect the staff from falling to the ground. Brackets on the platform are utilized for fastening the worker's safety harness.
